Naturism and climbing in Provence. Bouches du Rhone. France. by Eric Lon

I don't write reviews often but felt compelled to do so with this. It's an excellent book, well written and with beautifully designed diagrams which demonstrate the concepts extremely well. I'm an experienced climber with 20 years under my belt and this has still taught me some new things and reinforced others (”Am I supposed to do it this way just because I always have? Oh yes!”). It doesn't patronise, nor does it take the elitist approach. Just sensible and very readable. I've been reading it cover to cover and enjoyed doing so.

Whether you are new to the sport, training as an instructor, or just looking to bolster your knowledge, this is probably the best climbing book available.

Climbing gear is here at last by portlandbill

Having the right type of rock climbing shoes can severely affect the performance of your rock climbing - just like with many other sports; however, finding the best and most suitable rock climbing shoes for you may not be as easy as it seems due to the many different variety of styles on the market. For rock climbers especially, finding the right pair of shoes is important because the shoes are one of the most important tools needed. Good rock climbing shoes are designed to grip the rock, fit into cracks, and give your foot the flexibility it needs for the climb.

Before you go shopping for a pair of rock climbing shoes, it is important to consider all of the factors that will affect you. For example, consider the terrain that you will be in, the type of rock climbing you will be pursuing, and also your level of expertness.

Rock climbing shoes are manufactured with different purposes in mind, and for the type of terrain. It depends on how well you master rock climbing. For the beginners, the all-purpose shoes are usually the best way to go because they will give you the most freedom in mastering the techniques. There are three different types of shoes: all-purpose which is usually recommended to the beginners, high-performance which is for competitions and for difficult sport climbs, and also the slipper which is used primarily for gym climbing, and also training.

Depending on the type of rock climbing that you are interested in, you will need to buy a different style of rock climbing shoes. Consider the time of day when you will be rock climbing, the environment you will be rock climbing in, and also if you are interesting in rock climbing in competitions.

It is important to get the right fit so that your feet will not be sliding around in your shoes. Most climbing shoes will stretch in width so that they will make room for your heels and your toes. You should never feel pain from wearing the shoes, and if you find that it is a tight fit, move on a size up. If you plan to climb all day, you may want to find a pair of shoes which are comfortably snug, but if you plan on harder climbs you may want a tighter pair of shoes.

If you plan to wear socks when rock climbing, wear the socks with you when you are trying on the shoes because then you will be able to find a pair that is most comfortable, and will fit you perfectly. If you do not plan on wearing socks when rock climbing, then you may want to consider wearing a pair of liner socks when trying on the shoes because they will help your feet easily slide into the shoes.

Climbing Safety Gear

Rock Climbing Without a Safety Net by hpbitaxis

Most people consider rock climbing an extreme sport, meaning it entails a lot of risks. Nevertheless, the sport draws a lot of enthusiasts. Rocking climbing gear has to pass stringent quality controls and checks.

A serious rock climber will always have safety on top of his priorities.

Climbing enthusiasts may have all the latest gear, but the most basic equipment remains the same. A rock climber must always have the following gears: rope, harness helmet and rock climbing shoes.

There are different types of harnesses for outdoor or indoor use, as is the case of a wall climbing activity. There are also types for kids and adults.

Climbing Shoes

There are various types of foot wear for this particular sport.

They are also comfortable for using in long hours in this activity.

They come with a stiff sole that makes them wade through cracks in the rock with much ease as compared to others.

When choosing a pair of foot wear, it is okay to choose from your gym collection as these too are suitable for the activity

Climbing Walls

In general terms, a rock climbing wall is a unique creation that is used as a substitute for the natural ones by people who cannot frequent the outdoor activities. They are conveniently located for passionate people in the city centers.

The idea of rock climbing wall was first heard of in the United Kingdom and was first constructed by Don Robinson who was a lecturer in Physical Education. He is also famous for being the founder of DR climbing walls.

In these places they will normally be simple equipment made of plywood and will be held to a solid structure by use of screws and bolts.

These structures will also have grips normally made from various colors. The difference in color is a unique way of indicating the different routes to be followed. The artificial equipment used for this sport is a good thing for those learning the spot. When on construction the first people to use this unique equipment are given a chance to determine the difficulty in the sport.

Beginner's Primer on Indoor Climbing Gear

If you have never tried indoor rock climbing, now is the time.

Indoor Climbing vs Outdoor

Indoor rock climbing can make an excellent training ground for people who want to move onto outdoor rock climbing, or it can just be an excellent sport on its own. Not only will you build muscle while rock climbing, you will also lose weight quickly and start to feel great about yourself. There is nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment you will get when you reach the top of your climb.

The Evolution of Rock Climbing

Rock climbing has evolved significantly since 1964 when a Phys Ed professor from the United Kingdom débuted the first version. The original climbing walls were made of rocks inserted into a wall in a corridor. Now, all types of materials are being used, creating safer more varied climbing walls. Plywood walls with resin foot and hand holds are among the most popular.

Advantages of Indoor Climbing

Indoor climbing is popular for a few reasons. One of them is a more controlled and safer environment for beginners and those looking to take just a few less risks when climbing. Another reason, is the dependability. In climates where it rains frequently and climbers are often subjected to extreme weather, indoor rock climbing can be a great way around this. It is dangerous to climb in wet or windy conditions as you will have less traction and less ability to hold onto the wall. Indoor climbing solves this problem.

Climbing Equipment and Gear

Gerödel - climbing gear by Mike°

There is quite a bit of equipment that is required to stay safe and participate in indoor rock climbing. When you are just starting out, it is wise to rent your equipment from whatever gym you choose to climb at. Most gyms have packages that shouldn't cost you too much more than the climbing pass for the day. If you have been climbing for awhile or have the money to spend up front to get your own gear, you should look into purchasing several things.

Climbing Shoes and Harnesses

The most important of these is climbing shoes. There are different types of climbing shoes (the rubber, lacing materials and shape differ) depending on what type of climbing you will be doing, and what type of rocks are used in the walls. Next, you should look for your harness. Most climbers use a sitting harness which you step into and is worn like a diaper. This allows you to sit back and take a break when necessary and lean back when belaying down the wall.

More Climbing Gear

Climbing ropes and belay devices are necessary for the actual climb and will help propel you up and then down the wall. Chalk bags are used to keep the climbers hands dry, very important when you are relying on them to keep you firmly attached to a wall. Helmets are another important safety feature which can keep your head safe in case of a fall or an accident.

There are several other pieces of equipment that you can buy for indoor rock climbing, however this should get you started. Please keep in mind, if you are going to climb with a child, they will need a separate harness because of their small size. Always be safe and you will have a great time!
